Don't Forget The Simple Things

I am sure that my eldest DD is going to kill me when she sees this lovely photo of her on the web...lol....I just HAD to scrap it though. I am sure that she is getting sick of people snapping here at the times she looks so glamorous. We all take photos of special occasions such as birthdays and Christmas.. however we tend to forget to take photos just for the sake of recording what we do on a day to day basis. I love taking these photos the most... the unposed look, the look of normal life, capturing us when we least expect it.

In this layout below I was able to record how I like the fact that my eldest DD is comfortable enough to be herself around us. that she doesn't feel that she needs all the "airs and graces" to be herself. I have encouraged our kids to be themselves no matter what. That it is important for people to like them for who they are and not what they could be (if you know what I mean).
Happy
Why not pull out your camera and take some picture to record the silly and quirky things of a normal day in our family life.

Cheers Michelle x

Summer Gifting @ Fiskarscraft

Designer: May Flaum

It’s summer, and that means that both time and money are tight around here. Today I want to share a few ideas to dress up gifts that are quick, use just a few supplies, and can really make a fun impact. Oh yeah, and I have a give away for one of you!! Just be sure to read to the very end of this page so you don’t miss out.

Beginner

Instructions (Print version)

Dressing up this little cake was fun, simple, and the firefighters we gave it to loved it! The girls and I like to bake goodies for our local firefighters as well as my husband's crew to show our appreciation. I'm not sure if we have more fun making the goodies, or if they enjoy eating them more.

1. First, bake up a cake or cupcakes. I used box mix and used small springform pans to make cakes bigger than cupcakes, but smaller than usual 8” or 9” rounds.

2. punch one edge with the apron lace border punch, then crimp 3”x 12” strips of blue cardstock. I needed two for this size cake, you could need more depending on size.

3. Punch three large twinkle twinkle stars in blue, and three in red. Then sandwich (I used a glue dot) on a toothpick and insert into cake. Be sure the points are not lined up so you can see both colors!

4. Finish by placing cake on plate (I covered a small cardboard circle with foil) and gluing tiny pom-poms around edge.

I wanted to gift this cute little baby boy outfit to a friend, but I don’t want to fully wrap it, but I did want to dress it up a little. My solution? A quick ribbon and tag!

1. Cut a tag (3 x 5) from both kraft and blue cardstock. Punch kraft cardstock with apron lace border punch along right side and layer on top of blue tag.

2.  Punch three (L) twinkle twinkle stars and attach to left side.

3. finish with buttons glued to the stars.

Finally, I want to share a little something with one of you! When I saw this cute paper by Cosmo Cricket with the scissors on it, I thought how fun it would be to create a funky little tag with my leftovers, and then to combine it with a give-away on my blog for one of you.

1. Place the paper (scissors) on yellow cardstock, then trim so that about ½ shows on bottom, about 1 ½” on top. Then use apron lace border punch along bottom.

2. Attach to pink cardstock (approximately 3 ½ x 5 ½)

3. Stitch lace on, then add smiling lady paper decoration (stitched around edges), and star punches.

4. Finish with a strip of crimped paper at the top, use admission corner punch on top corners, and use apron lace border punch along bottom of pink cardstock.

Everyday Inspiration by Dawn

Well I have been on a bit of a roll. Feeling inspired to scrap a little more. Quite a few basic layouts but any scrapping is good.

For this layout I have used the Leave it to Weaver border punch under the journaling and along the bottom of the layout. I have backed them both with different coloured cardstock rather than thread ribbon through them.

I used coordination Heidi Grace alphabet stickers and sanded them.

Birthday Cakes and texture plates

Just recently my daughter had her birthday party and I made her a cake....
Mishaels5thBdayCake
Hopefully you see the swirls in the background... anyway you will see them in this simple tutorial...

Print out two copies of a picture from your computer (I used a colouring in page from the internet)
1cake
I used Fiskars No 8 scissors and Fiskars finger tip craft knife for cutting out the pieces.

2cake
Next I bought soft white icing from the supermarket and took out my desired Fiskars texture plate.

Then mixed my desired colours for my pieces.
3cake
I separated out the icing into various blobs and put a couple of drops of each desired colour into them. Leaving one big blog white for my background. The back of the Hansells packet has a very handy colour mixing guide.

I then rolled out my large white blob of icing and put it over my cake.
Then pressed the side of the Fiskars texture plate I wanted into my icing. (washing the plate first under warm soapy water of course and drying it)
4cake
And the result...
5cake
Then I rolled out my other colour blobs of icing and cut out with the finger tip craft knife (which the blade was new and cleaned for this project)
6cake
I then wet the opposite side of the cut out shape a little and stuck it on my cake.
Repeat for all pieces. The other printed out picture is a guide and then a colouring in project for your birthday person. ;)
7cake
The finished project again..
Mishaels5thBdayCake
and some cupcakes doing something similar for the background and rolling left over icing to make the flowers putting eatable silver sprinkles in the center.
Cupcakes

Have a great time baking!
see you next time...

Birthday Card Holder....

I tend to keep all the Birthday cards, Mothers Day cards etc and never really know where to put them. A few years ago I came across a fabulous idea of a card holder constructed out of chipboard and scrapbook paper and embellishments.

Step 1: Cut your chipboard to size. I made my chipboard pieces large enough to hold the big cards that you may receive. I cut my pieces of chipboard 7.5" x 10".

IMG_1530

Step 2: Glue your pieces of chipboard to your paper. I used the Cloud 9 Finleys Estate collection. Ensure to cover your chipboard pieces all the way to the edges with glue.

IMG_1535

Step 3: Wrap the edges of your paper around the chipboard and stick down using double sided tape.

IMG_1537

Step 4: Cut a co-ordinating piece of patterned paper to finish off the inside covers of the chipboard.

IMG_1539

Step 5: Ink the edges of your chipboard covers and put a hole in the top left hand corner using the Fiskars Hole Punch.

IMG_1542

Step 6: Decorate the front cover using embellishments and rub-ons for the name.

IMG_1546

Step 7: Punch holes in the cards and thread through them with ribbon.

IMG_1549

Step 8: Finish off by tying ribbon around the card holder to keep the cards in place.

Beach Tote @ Fiskarscraft

Designer: Susan Weinroth

It’s so easy to create your own personalized tote bag – perfect for taking along to the beach or pool this summer – and complete with a pocket on the front for your sunscreen or sunglasses!

Large

Difficulty rating

Intermediate

Instructions (Print version)

Start with a basic canvas tote bag.  I purchase mine for under $5 from a large craft chain store.
Use the 45mm comfort grip rotary cutter, with acrylic ruler and mat, to cut strip of fabric long enough to wrap around the bag.  You want the fabric to be cut 2 inches wider that you actually want it to be sewn on the bag.  Measurements will vary depending on your bag.
Iron fabric and then fold 1 inch of width under along each long side (to ensure smooth edges once fabric is sewn to bag.  If you want to layer fabric for your bag – as I did with the dot background with stripes on top, repeat process of cutting and ironing with top fabric, then pin and machine stitch to bottom fabric.
CREATE POCKET:  Trim a 10 inch wide by 12 inch long piece of fabric for pocket.  Fold and press both sides of the 10 inch width inwards by 2.5 inches on each side.  Fabric should now measure 5 x 12.  Along the 12 inch side, fold and press fabric in and under by 3 inches on each side.  You have now formed the base of your 5x6 inch pocket.  Machine stitch inseam along top edge only of pocket with a 1/8 inch inseam.  Next pin pocket to desired place on fabric (fabric that will be wrapped around tote bag), and machine stitch around sides and bottom edges of pocket using a 1/8 inch inseam.
Pin fabric wrap to tote bag and machine stitch along edges to secure to bag.
Create flower embellishment for bag.  Use the Ultra Shape Xpress circle template to trace and trim circles of various sizes from fabric.  Layer circles and machine stitch around edge of smallest and top circle.  Sew on a button center and then use fabric glue to attach to your tote bag.

Happy Birthday month

Have been wanting to alter one of these sweet tins for ages. I thought it would make a great birthday gift container. Using Heidi Grace Only Times patterned paper I cut a 3 1/2" circle with the Fiskars Ultra Shape Express for the top and strips for the sides. Then added Cloud 9 Raindots to the top and ribbon around the base. The little gift card is sprayed first with Glimmer Mist then the cut out image from the Only Times p/p added and some raindots.

I used the new Ink By Steph grunge range available now in Spotlight. The journaling is lyrics of a song that inspires my daughter to be herself and not follow everyone else.

I used epoxy stars and rhinestones to embellish the existing pattern on the paper.

Birthday Party decorating using your scrapping gear

Maddison celebrated her 9th birthday last month and she had the 4 girls in her class over for a play. Not an organised party as such, they swam in the pool and played in the cubby and enjoyed giggling and laughing as little girls do!!

I had picked up some bead kits from Spotlight that were marked down from $10 to just 5o cents and had about 1/2 an hour to joojie up some bags to pop them into along with some sweets and a chocky.

DSC04219

Basic brown paper lunch bags were the ideal size and then out came the stamp press for the large diamond background stamp, used with paint. And frankie the push and print stamp factory worked efficiently and quickly for the "flower" stamp, the "girlfriends" stamp  and the "you rock" stamp.

The squeeze punch for punching out the circles after they were stamped is also a quick and effective measure!!

What took the longest? Waiting for the paint to dry - shoved them out in the sun to quicken the process, remember if you are stamping with paint, be sure to clean your stamps immediately.

DSC04222

Fold over the top, seal with a staple and glue on a piece of ribbon and all done!!

We also popped a few May flowers punched out squeeze punch shapes on her cake for a bit of decoration.

DSC04259

Its great that in this craft we love that we can use our stash for other things as well!

Products used for this project...

Stamps:Fiskars Harlequin charm (diamond background)

Heidi Grace clear stamps Girlfriends (flower and girlfriends and you rock)

circle and may flowers squeeze punches

Birthday layout..."Turning 10"

Birthday layouts can be quite challenging for most of us.  There are usually multiple photos, some taken in a hurry to capture the moment, so may be out of focus, or very busy in the background.

But for me, my children's birthdays are something I try to get recorded in my albums because the years pass so quickly and they can change so much between birthdays.

I've given up trying to include all photos on a layout but I still try to make a multi photo layout, the challenge being including enough to remember the moments.

For this layout I went for wallet size so I could use 6 photos and still fit a bit of journaling in without it becoming cluttered.

Turning 10

I went for my favourite simple white background.  It's so easy to use up bits of scrap papers using Fiskars tools.

Punches used: Fiskars Circle Border Punch "Antique Elegance", and the Large & XL Circle punches.

Papers: Heidi Grace and Cloud 9

Stamp: Ink by Steph

Stickers and Accents: Heidi Grace

Happy Birthday Fiskars!

Happy Birth Day Baby

I can't remember if I shared this baby book or not but thought it would fit the birthday theme as a birth day.

I used a Kaiser 8 x8 chipboard album cover and designed the inside of the album myself. I used the Heidi Grace Baby range. I love the flocked papers in this range and the rubons. You could use any of Heidi Grace's ranges to make something similar. Heidi has some lovely themed ranges.

I used matching papers, rubons and alphabet letters (covered in kindi glitz) and various ribbons on the binder rings.

I have made two of these albums. The first one I did for a naming day and used a quote on the bottom of each page instead of rubons. The pages inside included gifts received, godparents, guest of your special day etc

This album was designed so that the mum could just jot down notes throughout the month. Lacey was baby number four and Mum doesn't have quite as much time as she used too so I thought it would be an easy way of recording all the milestones Lacey achieves.

This is a layout I did recently of my nephew Dylan.

I used an older range by Cloud 9 called Max's Backyard. It's still one of my favourite ranges. I used the 3d butterfly and the matching alphabet stickers.

I hand journaled in white pen directly onto the photo.

Doll making and using the 12 in 1 tool

Now I just had to have a sewing excuse so when I was contacted online the last night about a friends baby shower in the weekend -  I got right to work on a sewing project.

I have a lot of bits of material so a blanket/quilt was out of the question for now. As I didn't have about a week or two to make it so I ended up making this:
BabyDoll
took about 6 hours from start to finish.

Here the top of the head.
Hairbabydoll
All that embroidery I did as a kid really came in handy here!

This handy tool came really in handy for a few things.....
Sewingallinone
The Fiskars 12 in 1 tool!!!

I used the small needle threader for threading the needles when I sewed the face and hair. (first time I've used a needle threader and now I wonder why I haven't used one before!
Needletreader
Its holder doubles as a magnifying glass too. How handy is that!

The thread cutter was great too. I used that one several times.
Cottoncutter

Now how big is the doll?
Hmmm lets see and measure it with the tape measure in the tool.
LengthBabydoll
Now what I like about this is that its not spring mounted so that it flings back when you are not ready. I really hate that. Just pull it out. measure and then wind back on. Very handy. Oh comes in inches and centimeters. ;)

Closeuplength
hmmm just under 17 inches long.

Stuffer
What is that? Well its a stuffer tool.
I've always used a knitting needle and constantly bending and snapping in half many many knitting needles. Just put the little tool into the top of the 12 in 1 tool and you have a long very handy stuffer tool that doesn't go through the seam as easy as a knitting needle point. (I like that fact too.)

I have used the hole piercer (long pointy thing) to put holes in material for the eyelets in my fabric album posted up through June. good for poking holes in cardstock and paper too.

There is a unpicker in this tool as well. Gladly I have not had to use it - yet.

Well that is 7 of the 12 tools in this handy little unit reviewed. Just got to figure out how to use the rest. lol

Hey if you want this very handy doll pattern go to:
http://judisdolls.com/babybows/babybows.html

I did alter it here a bit - but it is easy to do. And all you have to do is dress it in second hand newborn babies clothing instead of making some yourself. Unless you want to do that too. Fun fun. Could also be a good project to do with 5-12 year olds. My 2.5 yr old found it fun stuffing it with me. ;)

Happy crafting!
