For this months Challenge I have chosen DRY EMBOSSING
What is DRY EMBOSSING???? It’s creating a raised image on paper by applying pressure on a textured surface.
Dry embossing is an extremely versatile technique. It can be very subtle or it can have lots of impact.
Let's have a closer look at dry embossing.
There are a few ways you can dry emboss. Here are a couple:
The Fiskars way (see below) ..... or if you don't have any of our embossing tools yet, you can still do it the 'old fashioned way'. Grab a light box, or lean up against a window (during daylight hours) and trace over the image you'd like to create on your piece of paper with a stylus (or freestyle it yourself). The round end of the stylus will make a nice indent in your paper, without tearing it.
To dry emboss the Fiskars way, you’ll need a couple of tools:
Fiskars Scrapboss, Shapeboss or Cardboss – this tool is a 2 template system which fits on a pegged worktable to hold your templates securely and squarely on top of one other. You then place your cardstock or paper between the templates and use a stylus to draw around your chosen design. Your design will then be embossed onto your cardstock.
Tips …have the right side of your paper facing down.
…use the grid lines on the top template to line up your design. I have used the grid lines to do the photo corner on the “Love” layout.
Fiskars Textured Plates – this tool is used to create larger embossed areas that have a common theme: eg stars, snowflakes, and hearts. Position your cardstock or paper over the top of the texture plate and rub over the back of the cardstock with the Fiskars texturing tool or stylus.
Tips …have the right side of your paper facing down.
…tape your cardstock to the textured plate so it doesn’t move…..very important!!
Here are some ideas for your dry embossing...
On plain linen cardstock … for a simple and classic effect.
On vellum … creates an etched glass look. When using vellum don’t rub just draw.
Ink your embossed design… swipe an ink pad lightly over the top of you design.
Sand your embossed design… this works great on white cored patterned paper/CS.
Try different types of craft materials … like craft metals or suede paper.
Free styling…..use textured surfaces around the house, the same way you would use a textured plate.
Well that’s dry embossing in a nutshell. So I challenge you to give it go!!
All entries need to be emailed here so they can be uploaded to the gallery. The challenge closes on the 15th of January and I'll announce the winner on the 16th
Happy embossing
