Sketch of the Month @ Fiskarscraft

This page is the perfect showcase for 2 of your favorite 4x6 photos (if you have vertical photos instead of horizontal, just rotate the sketch 90degrees!).  Putting the layout together and adding your own punched embellishments will be the easy part – but with Father’s Day and lots of fun summer photo ops in June, you might have trouble picking which photographs to us. I chose to make my page a tribute to my husband, who is the best daddy that I know.

Instructions (Print version)

1. Start with a 12x12 piece of white cardstock as your base. Use the Twist N Flip corner punch on all four corners.
2. Use Upper Crest border punch on two strips of aqua ledger paper.  Attach on either side of your page, with the wider strip on the right.  Journal on the wider strip of aqua ledger paper.
3. Attach 2 4x6 photos to the middle of the page.
4. Spell out title using letter stickers under your photos.

5. Use Round N Round squeeze punches in M, L & XL on various patterned papers.  Stack your circles and embellish with stitching and buttons.  I also added some foam adhesive between the layers to add dimension.
6. Use Twinkle Twinkle squeeze punch on various patterned papers and attach around the circles.
7. Add buttons around the circles and stars.
8. Use Tag You’re It squeeze punch on yellow patterned paper. Date each photo and add to your page with buttons.

Sharing some published layouts

Hi, I thought I would share a couple of layouts which appeared in Issue 1 of the new NZ magazine Innovation last month.  These 2 layouts used some Fiskars product and one in particular ties in well with our theme of "Shapes" for June:

The layout : Favourite TV was part of an article about using lists of things as inspiration for layouts and projects.  I interviewed each of the family and used a filter in my photo program to alter the photos.  By using simple rectangular shapes, and then simply decorating using a circle scallop punch and circle punches, the actual journaling takes on better focus.

The second layout "My Girl" uses Cloud 9 papers.  I used the Circle Border punch "Antique Elegance" for the top right corner and added a variety of flowers - some of them are Cloud 9 Vellum and others are stickers.  There are some other manufacturers products on this one too.

Clowning Around

I love being able to catch my family doing silly things. I love even more being able to record these things when I scrap. I am not one to scrap for an occasion but more so to scrap for the moment, if you know what I mean. I like to capture the special times we share and the funny things that make us happy.

This particular photo shows the fun that my kids have with their Dad. I cherish the fact that he has taught them to laugh at themselves and be themselves no matter what. I think that is a very special thing.

Making a Fabric Album - The Appliqued Pages

Punching Shapes

 

Punching shapes is made easy with a Fiskars Squeeze Punch. I love that they are portable ... perfect to pack in my crop bag to take out scrapping with friends. I love that they are so easy to use and I love that one simple punched shape can be used in many different ways.

Lately I've been having lots of fun with this scalloped square punch.

I had a need for a couple of baby cards over the weekend. So I pulled out some Heidi Grace Sweetest Bug papers and got punching. I actually wanted to make a line of bunting on my cards so needed a triangle shape ... easily done by cutting punched squares in half ... but even easier to line up the paper only half way into the punch and get perfect triangles.

I've used some dimensional stickers from the Sweetest Bug range to add dimension to the flower scene at the bottom of the card and foam tape helps separate the layers of bunting.

Of course it's nice to add a little colour to the inside of the card too ... and a good way to use up a few more triangles which I got carried away with punching out!

Here's a similar card which I made for my little nephew who turned one this week.

Rectangle Fever

Tried something different with this layout. Have been playing with 8.5 x 11" layouts lately and wanted to be able to include multiple photos on this size. It can be a bit challenging as I didn't really want to make the photos too small. So all I did was crop the main picture into a rectangle and used this as the base. I then cut my remaining photos to fit the space left. Using patterned paper I filled in the cardstock spaces with rectangle to "fill" in the rest. If that makes sense...lol... The papers I was using worked so well for the subject and colours of the layout. I am happy with the end result and I managed to get 3 decent size photos onto an 8.5x 11" layout. YEAH !!

Applique with Donna Dewbury

ohhhh you will love the new Fiskars stencil sets by Donna Dewbury if you love sewing and appliqueing like me!

The starter set comes with a shape cutter, two blades, the butterfly/dragonfly stencil and a cutting mat! Wowza!

Because my love is to teach others what I know here is a tutorial for you....

Here is my daughters top with some tell-tail stains.

I was looking through my local sewing shop and saw some beauties that I just had to have..... megga wide ribbon!

Just perfect for doing the project that I wanted to do.... so I set to work....
I cut out all the shapes I needed with the shape cutter and templates.
Preparing the ribbon by ironing on Heat-n-bond (heavy duty) and then cutting the shapes out just like paper. Its just magic to use.....

Then with the shapes cut out I placed them on a piece of plain-ish material for backing.
My aim was to make those fancy patches you see in the sewing shops....

Sew around your shapes in a tight zig zag stitch building your flower and butterfly.

looking good!

Now cut around your lovely rose near the edge of it with your awesome Fiskars - Donna Dewbury spring action scissors.... (my sons finger not included)

Next sew your patches onto the desired top or garment you which to revamp.

all done! and looking really professional!

hey I realized that you - the readers have really gone on an awesome journey with me over the last year with my experimenting with appliqueing and Fiskars tools. Yes that skirt is one I did ages ago.

Shape inspration - stars

Hi,

i don't get to do alot of boy pages- my gorgeous step son dislikes having his photo taken- mmmmm but he was hamming it up so i managed to get the one i have used on this layout! He is a great tennis player is our Jeremy and hopes to make it to the highest level one day soon :) We hope so to. He is such a good sport, we are soooo proud of him. We think he is already a star - so here is the layout i created using lots of stars.....

I didn't have any star templates- so i hand drew these - hence the wonkiness (is that even a word?) of some :) I like them anyway :) I used my  trusty Fiskars scissors to cut them out :)

Papers used are from the  Heidi Grace Oh so moody range including the flocked dots and I also used some older paper that worked in well, these being Heidi Grace woodland Pinstripe and OH so Loved dots. The title stickers are Cloud 9 Sunrise Smoothie medium cardstock stickers.

So whether you have the Fiskars star template or if you just want to hand draw your stars like i did,  i hope you have fun using this shape in a layout.

    HELLO!!

Hope this finds you all well.

You know with this craft we all find inspiration in different places, for me the other day it was when i was putting away the groceries.

I had just purchased another round squeeze punch to add to the collection which was sitting on the bench when i was discarding all the packaging from the shopping, it hit me how much of a waste it was, so...........

 

 

I mean to say, good colours, nice thick glossy card stock......

 

oops forgot to mention i had also got some new stamps around the same time that were on the bench, so they teamed up perfectly as well ;0) - the "Heidi Grace Girlfriends" clear stamps. Jacky has also used them on some cards, you can check them out HERE ON HER POST.

Barcodes, apples and tomatoes, made perfect centres for my flowers and with some glossy accents to finish them off, not bad for something that was on its way to the bin!

 

Circles cut into the shapes you see on the card above make quick and easy little boats, which would work equally as well on a little boys card as opposed to a "baby" card. The circle punch is positioned over 2 colours, you can see in the first pic where i punched the circles from. The left hand sail is clipped to make one edge straight. Whack it on some uppey tape, draw the extra bits and you're done. The stamp for this card is from the "Heidi Grace Baby" set.

 

This tag is made using 1/2 a big squeeze punch circle (the apples down the bottom) as the centre of the flower and the top orangey yellow tab is one of the flaps off the stock cube box. The "girlfriends stamps have been used here too.

 

And the last one a BIG squeeze punch circle as the flower centre. Roughly draw a freehand flower around the outside, layer onto a card, add some bling and ribbon and you have a simple tag type card.

Yes i did do this in the middle of unpacking the groceries!!

But i made sure the cold stuff was away first :0)

Shape inspiration - circles

My shape inspiration is circles..I love em.

I've used a same colour on colour combo (Donna and I must be on the same wave length LOL) I've  punched out circles with the squeeze punches and just distessed the edges with my fingernail. This gave great texture and depth. The stamps I've used are Heidi Grace's "Girlfriend" stamps - one of my favorite sets.

So heres the regular card

 

And then I decided to do a tag

  

I have a little thing for tags...I really like them. For two reasons, firstly they are quick and easy to make and secondly I came to the realization awhile ago that kids are too excited when they get presents to open and read a card... so now I use a tag instead so they can get to the present quicker. Now lets be honest in the eyes of children the present is always better than card.

Tag Shaped Card

 

The tag template was hung off the side of the fold a bit. Then cardstock was added and trimmed behind it. No double sided tape adhesive was used at all.

I used:

• Kimberly Poloson - Natures Flora patterned cardstock, word sticker, dimensional sticker cut to only have the butterfly. (available in spotlight from July)

• Fiskars - Ultra Shape express with tag template

• Fiskars - XL Scallop circle squeeze punch

• Fiskars - xmas mini eyelets with eyelet setters

• Ribbon - celebrate

Layered shapes

I've had this idea floating around in my head for a while and finally made it after being re-inspired by a layered lampshade in a Interiors magazine!

Using a piece of white cardstock, the Fiskars butterfly template, the Fiskars Ultra Shape express and a few Cloud 9 and Heidi Grace letters.

Three different sized butterfly bodies are layered using dimensional dots.

The monochromatic colour scheme relies on the light and dimension... I love the result... and it was so easy to do!

Making a Fabric Album - The Appliqued Pages

Welcome back to the Fabric Album Tutorial.
In the past we:

• Part3: Doing the inner pages

• part1: Made and decorated the cover

Today is the last lesson. We will be Appliqueing some pages with the Ultra Shape Express and some templates.

1. you will need your iron, Material, Material stiffener (I used Heat n Bond lite available at Spotlight), Ultra shape express and chosen templates, with cutting mat.

 

2. Cut out a "square" of Heat n Bond that is the length and width of your desired shape with your No 8 Fiskars scissors.

 

3. follow heat n bond instructions for ironing onto the material

 

4. make sure your Fiskars Ultra shape express has a very new, sharp blade in it and put the cutting mat under the material. Shape template on top of the heat n bond and cut as per usual.You may need to go over areas twice. I cut the shape out with small repeated strokes as I was going around the template.

 

5. cut some of the design where it didn't cut if you are like me and didn't change the blade. ;)

 

6. Pin your shape onto your "page"

and sew using a tight zig zag stitch
 

7. Do as many as desired.
 

8. Then add your photos and embellishments
 

9. Use the negatives of your shapes for a different effect.
 

Then sew your pages up as per lesson 3 - Part3: Doing the inner pages

Assemble your album and end up with something like this.....
