My BABY turns 27 today!

What do you get a 27 year old male for his birthday?  My BABY ....TIM.....turns "27" TODAY!

I had to put my thinking cap on for this one I might add.....LOL!

Here's what I came up with......

An RACV Membership and Card...seeing he travels all over the place with his job as a carpenter/builder.

I decided to get out my trusty Fiskars Tools and create a fairly plain card using some two -tone cardstock I had in my stash.

So out came the Fiskars Craft Mat,UltraXpress Shapcutter and Ovals Template......

I cut out one of the ovals and distressed around the edges with my emery board so that the white core shows through.......then cut along the one edge of the folded card using the side of the template and my USE.This edge was also distressed using my Emery Board.

Next.....got out a few more tools.....emery board,heat gun,embossing pad and powder ,white acrylic paint and brush.

I searched and found some chipboard numbers in my stash....a "2" and a "7" and then used some white acrylic paint to paint them.....oops forgot to take a pic of the paint brush and my mess......LOL! Oh well...never mind.....you don't really want to see my mess do you.....LOL!

Next I applied two coats to the numbers.....once dry I embossed them using some clear embossing powder.......adhered to the top of the cut oval shape....and then I placed some 3 -D foam underneath the oval and adhered to the front of the Card.

I then hand wrote a birthday message to Tim inside using my White Gel Pen.

Card DONE!!

I purchased the RACV Membership on-line......but you can purchase these in any RACV Shop...it's just that we live miles away from the nearest one so it was easier for me to do it on-line!

Tip: You could use this idea for any birthday and just change the numbers to suit!

Using Fiskars Tree Template for Quilting

Two things you'll rarely find missing from something I create are dimension and texture. I've found small wall quilts are a great way to experiment with new techniques, as well as trying out different combinations of textures and techniques to see how they look together. Putting them on a wall quilt leaves me with a nice project when I'm finished playing in lieu of little samples that might normally be pushed aside and forgotten.

I used the Fiskars Woodland Tree Shape Template as a stencil for my appliques on this wall quilt, cutting 16 hearts from a variety of fabrics.

I wanted smaller leaves on my tree than the template provides so I used the bird wing as a leaf stencil, cutting them from an old wool sweater. I then crocheted around the perimeter of each leaf. If you don't crochet, you can add a blanket stitch, or any stitch you like. The wool was thick and made getting even stitches difficult but gave me a rustic look I really liked and blended in well with the finished look I had in mind.

The tree is also cut from an old wool sweater. Due to the thickness of the material and the fuzzy texture which a pen wouldn't write on, I created a paper pattern using the template. When doing this, be sure to use lots of pins to prevent the pattern from shifting during cutting.

Using the 18" x 24" Cutting Mat, the 45 mm Comfort Grip Rotary Cutter, and the 3.5" x 18" Acrylic Ruler, I cut the base materials for the quilt.

I cut the front to 14" x 16" knowing I wanted to use the raw edges of the fabric.

I cut the back panel 15" x 17" and folded and pressed all the edges in 1/2" so I would have a nice finished edge on the back.

I sandwiched quilt batting, cut slightly smaller than the back panel and cheese cloth cut to 16" x 18".

The panel in the center of the quilt is an 8" x 8" square.

The blue horizontal strip is 3.5" x 16".

After cutting all the fabric pieces, I laid the out on the front panel.. I wanted a rustic look so I just eyeballed the placement of all the pieces. I pinned the fabric panels in place and adhered the hearts with fusible web.

Next, I stitched all the pieces in place.

I hand stitched the tree trunk to the front panel using random french knots and seed stitches. I attached the leaves with a back stitch.

Finally, I sandwiched the quilt batting and cheese cloth between the front and back panels and hand stitched using a back stitch all the way around the quilt. This could be done by machine to save time.
And with the finished project, I have a sampler with 2 new techniques (the crocheted leaves and the cheesecloth layer) that I can hang in my sewing room to remind me to try them on other projects in the future.

Annettes Monthly Calender challenge

I'm a bit early with March but we are heading off on school holidays so thought I would get it done now.

To keep the pages uniform for the 12 months i have chosen to make this little embellishment for the bottom right hand side of each layout.

These are nice and quick, 1/2 a large squeeze punch circle inked around the edge, topped with a scalloped loveheart and a small squeeze punch circle that have been scrunched up. Sew all together with a vintagey button and some DMC thread and pop on your layout. Highlight the edge with rhinestones to match and include your little date stickers and all done.

 
For the month titles i have used the shape template "letters # 3" and rather than cut them out I have used it like a stencil and coloured inside with watercolour crayons, that way i have been able to write over the title whilst still being able to read the journalling and vice versa. I have also used month stamps as a continuous feature throughout.

My corners have been rounded using the larger of the squeeze punch corner rounders and i have used the threading water border punch for my small scallop coloured edge, i have just hidden the holes that are normally punched out with this border punch with the scallop.

Lyn here....Well it's school holiday time again and the kids might be looking for something fun to do.

There's no better way to ward off end-of-winter blues than planning for spring! One of my favorite ways to do this is to begin to plan my garden. I created these cute garden gifts with spring planting in mind. They’re super easy to make using small terra-cotta pots, seed packets, garden markers, and your Fiskars tools! So fun to share a little springtime with friends!

Instructions:
1. Begin by decorating the terra-cotta pots. I created a "grass" border for the inside of th pot using Fiskars Leave it to Weaver border punch. Simply punch a one inch wide strip of cardstock, then trim one side to create the grass effect. Adhere around the inside rim of the terra-cotta pot.

2. Use the Lacy Days of Summer border punch to create a decorative strip to adhere to the outside rim of the pot. Add another strip of 1-inch wide paper underneath punched strip.

3. To create the plant markers, use the Tags template to cut a large tag out of kraft cardstock. Attach a plant marker to the back, using craft tape.

4. Embellish the top of the tag with punched shapes (I used Fiskars Limited Edition spring punches). Adhere with foam adhesive for extra dimension.

Slip a few seed packets in each pot and a garden marker, and you're sure to make someone smile!

Easter Crafts during National Craft Month

Stamped Easter Eggs

One of the things I love about Fiskars stamp sets is the variety of shape and size within each set. The smaller designs I found in several stamp sets were ideal for this project.

Instructions:

1. Prepare the eggs ahead of time. Start with washing the raw eggs with soap and water. Thoroughly rinse and dry the shell and set aside.
Note: If you prefer or are doing this project with children, use boiled eggs. However, if you are not using non-toxic ink it would be best not to consume the eggs.

2. Use a needle to poke a hole in the top and bottom of the egg and blow out the contents inside into a bowl.

3. Rinse the shells again and set aside to dry thoroughly.

4. Choose small stamp designs to avoid slipping. Then stamp the images in rows or randomly to create the design you wish.

5. Use a clear wax crayon to draw over portions or the entire image. The wax will serve as a sort of mask preventing the dye from covering the parts of the egg where the wax crayon was applied.

6. Dip eggs in the dyeing liquid. The longer the egg is left in the dye, the contrast will be developed between the vibrant the dye color and the white shell color.

7. Remove the eggs from the dye and let dry completely.

8. To create the egg stands, cut 1.25 inch (or wider) by 5.5 inch long strips of patterned paper or cardstock. Stamp border designs or other images along the length of the paper and highlight with markers. Apply adhesive to the ends and form a cylinder shape to support the egg.

9. Add additional embellishments at this time; gems, buttons, etc.

Not long now....

for the Easter Bunny....I love Easter and I love Easter eggs. Darrell Lea Rock-a-lea Road eggs are my favorite. Only one more week to wait!

Good morning :0)

Well as Easter is nearly upon us again, i thought i would share one of the favourites of the Hanigan household at this time of the year.

Making these delicious eggs was on the agenda for this weekend, but the kids have been blowing and dyeing eggs instead, (pics later), so this has been put off till through the week. Which probably is a good idea as they are just far to tempting sitting in the fridge.

So this is last years batch. If you are looking for a lovely handmade treat and something the kids can help with, then this is for you!!

   ROCKY ROAD EASTER EGGS

 

THIS RECIPE IS OUT OF A BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS MAGAZINE

Preparation time: 10 minutes plus 30 minutes chilling time

Cooking time:  5 minutes

Serves 4

******

300g dark chocolate

100 g milk chocolate

300ml cream

100g marshmallow, roughly chopped

100g Madeira cake, roughly chopped

100g chocolate freckles, roughly chopped

canola oil spray

hundreds and thousands

Step 1.  Break the dark and milk chocolate into pieces in a bowl.  Bring cream to the boil in a saucepan and pour it over the chocolate.  Stir until chocolate has melted, then put bowl over a larger bowl of iced water, to cool.  In another bowl, mix marshmallows with the cake and chocolate freckles.

Step 2.  Spray each egg half-mould half with canola oil and line with plastic wrap, leaving a 1cm overhang.  flatten out any air pockets under the plastic wrap.  When chocolate and cream mixture has cooled to about 30-34 degrees celsius (just below body temperature and still runny), combine it with the marshmallow mixture.  Fill each half-mould with mixture to just above the rim.  Align the 2 halves and gently press together.  Wrap whole egg moulds in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Step 3.  When set, remove the eggs from moulds.  Roll in hundreds and thousands.

PS, make sure you use "nice" chocky, not cooking chocky.... soooo much nicer ;0)

Another Calendar Layout...

Here is my second layout for Dawn's monthly calendar challenge, just in time to finish March.  

Once again I've created a collage of all my daily photos from February and printed it as a single photo.  As there are so many photos on the layout I've kept embellishments to a minimum... a super quick layout!

I can't wait to see all the March layouts!

Easter Treats

Looking for a cute and practical way to present a small Easter gift to someone ?  Why not make a quick and easy 'sour cream container' or a small gift bag ?

The 'sour cream container' is simply made from a rectangle of cardstock and decorated as desired.  Do an online search and you'll find loads of sites with both written and video tutorials.  I used the scalloped blade on my rotary trimmer to pretty the ends, then crimped them a little with my paper crimper.  Layered cardstock elements make the flower on the top (use pre-made or create your own).

The gift bag (which fits onto 1 x A4 sized page) can be found HERE or search this blog or online for other styles.

I printed the gift bag template onto white printer paper, then cut it out with my fingertip knife, traced it onto the back of my cardstock, and then cut that out and glued it together as per the instructions.  The bunny in the middle of the flower was an image I found online and printed onto cardstock.  I punched it out using my 'round n round' squeeze punch.  I used the scallop blade on my rotary trimmer and cut a length of white, and a length of pink cardstock, then layered them and adhered them to the top of my baggie.

These projects are certainly something that the kids would enjoy, and they're a great way to use up cardstock that you're not-so-fond-of anymore for layouts.

tools and tracing paper

I love tools and tracing paper. With these two things you are never short of a page embellishment.

You may remember the ongoing procrastination of my mini christmas album, I was challenged by Lyn in November last year to have it finished in 2 weeks... well its been a very long 2 weeks. One of the problems with getting the album done was that I had run out of probuct. So I pulled out the trusty tracing paper.

Here's the inspiration....a patterned paper used though out the album

 

and here's the result...

 

I simply made a pattern off the paper and traced it on cardstock, cut it out, embellished and assembled 

 
 

And finally the christmas album is getting done.

 

Tools used...softtouch sissors and Mini eyelet setter.

A Calendar Layout...

With all the craziness going on in my life right now I haven't been very productive at all in the craft room this year but I have been diligent about taking a photo a day for my project 365.  I'm loving the challenge of taking photos every day and although most of my photos are not terribly exciting I am already loving going back and looking at them.

When Dawn introduced her calendar challenge earlier this year I decided that was something that I needed to do but until now have not managed to find the time or the desk space to accomplish the task. Yesterday however my desk (and in fact my whole study) was beautifully clean and my family had all gone out for a and hour and a half so I sat down and put together this super quick layout for January.  The collage was done with the awesome picasa program (for Mac) and I used my trusty Fiskars 12" trimmer and my soft touch scissors... simple, quick and one layout done... yay!

Now since my desk is still clean and my mojo has returned I might even try and get some easter cards prepared for my kiddos.

February Calendar Challenge

Thanks to all who have sent through their February Calendar Challenge this month. It's been a hectic week in my household with two sick kids. One of them has had numerous tests, x-rays etc this week to rule out a few health problems. We are hoping it will be something she will grow out of.

Hello!!! :0)))

Well there was great excitement in our house this morning as the kids got ready for St Patricks Day. They are allowed to dress up in the obvious colour of the day ;0) and are selling green frozie cups at school to raise funds for their Relay for Life Team. This is what they looked like....

Don't you just LOOOVe those groovy sunglasses ;0). And whats even scarier... I think DS # 1 may have actually worn them clubbing the other night!!!!

Now don't forget it is NATIONAL CRAFT MONTH and over at Fiskars there is a Project a Day for the whole month of March.

Todays project just happens to be a Saint Patricks Day Banner by Kendra Mc Cracken that looks like this.

US - An Anniversary Layout Share

Dh and I celebrate our 14th Wedding Anniversary Today, it has been a wonderful adventure.

I am truly blessed to be married to Duncan, he is the greatest joy in my life.

FernGully Stamps Craft Weekend report

What a fabulous weekend it was over at FernGully Stamps in Boronia .......Maurie and Kerry and their fabulous staff,daughter Cassy and son's Josh and Adam did an amazing job of organising this wonderful weekend of crafting!!

These guys put on a great weekend despite the family illness and the storm damage to the shop the previous weekend........I loved seeing the kids involved in this also.....working alongside mum or dad.....it was great fun....

Mykl was one of the many door prize winners on the day.....and I might add he was such a great participant on the day....he loved creating the "boookmark" with the Border Punches....and I think he tried out all squeeze punches....LOL!

We had a break for afternoon tea after the third rotation...then we continued with another two sessions..... Leone Em was there also on Sunday so we got to catch up and chat......she created a fun 3 D Card using her punches.....I still have some of her floral punches....just love them.

We were playing with lots of the Fiskars Tools but it was the Border Punches,Embossing Border Punches and Corner Border Punches that were flying off the shelves.....many crafters trying the Corner Border Punches and Embossing Punches for the first time....we started to run out of some punches but the store took orders....and we also opened some new punches on the Sunday to show what these could do...

I also got to play with the Lace and Lattice Corner Border Punch and Quilted Corners for the first time when I was asked to open a new packet.......OMG....I was in crafting heaven with this gorgeous NEW CB Punch..... 

So if you are in the Boronia area make sure you call into the FernGully Stamps store for your Fiskars Tools.....if you can't find what you are after there.....then pop on over the road....on Dorset Raod to Creative Dreams where they also have a HUGE range of FISKARS TOOLS.......these two CRAFT STORES have such wonderful staff who are only too glad to help you with your selection of tools.....both these store often ring me if they are unsure about a tool or have a customer enquiry......they really care for their customers!!

They also use Fiskars Tools in their classes.......so maybe you would like to book into a class at some stage! Diane and I had such a great time on the weekend demonstrating the Fiskars Tools in such a fun ,friendly and supportive learning environment....and the partipants were sure hitting the plastic card hard.....and going home with not only their fabulous purchases and Make'n'takes....but they also went home with a fabulous "GOODY BAG".......wanna' win one?
