Getting Organised in A Christmas Way

 


With Christmas creeping up on us slowly I wanted to get organised earlier this year.

Things can get kinda crazy around most households.

So next month on the Fiskars blog, I will be showing you some quick and easy projects/ideas to get organised in advance. They will be things that are quick to make, ideas of how to get organised and how to plan for gift giving and making.

In preparation for the month of planning,  today I will keep it simple...I want you to write a list of everyone you need to send a Christmas card to. This can be done in a diary or on the computer. That way you have a hard copy of it to work with.

I find by writing it all down I don't forget anyone.

My list looks something like this:

I have it set up like this so I can write their name and other details as you can see. I often include a Christmas photo/letter to closer friends and family I have made up on the computer. By doing it this way I can clearly see how many of each I need to do and where I am at. Also good when my husband wants to help out, as he can see where we are at.

Wreath Mania

I have a wreath obsession. They are rings of textural happiness to me. Wreaths can be everyday or seasonal home décor or festive party decorations by changing up the colors and materials.

This felt wreath uses two materials, wire and felt. Create a circle from sturdy wire or a wire hanger. Begin by cutting one inch strips of felt in assorted colors using a rotary cutter with acrylic ruler on a cutting mat. Mine are 12 inches long, but any length will work as long as it is an even number.

Next punch a 1/16 inch hole one inch from the side and then every two inches along center of strip. When your length is an even number, your last hole will automatically end up one inch from the end as well. To make this process super simple, I created a 1x12 inch template from cardstock and punched holes using a 1/8 inch hole punch.

Place template over strip and mark each hole with a marker as a punching guide.

Once all holes are punched, all that is left to do is thread the felt strips onto wire form using an accordion pattern.

Twist the wire ends together. The wreath can be left like this, or I decided to twist the felt randomly for a more playful feel.

Covering a wreath form with punches adds lots of texture easily.

I like the look of monochromatic texture, so I set out to create a teal floral wreath. I began with a pre-made foam wreath and short sewing pins. I spray painted both with an indoor/outdoor paint to keep everything the same color. Place the pins into spare foam or packaging to spray. By altering the wreath base color, I am able to pin the flowers all over without worrying about another color showing through the gaps.

Next, get punching. Punch lots of flowers from teal cardstock. Try varying shades of teal for added interest. Pin the flowers onto wreath form to complete. Gently fold up flower petals for added texture.

This final wreath is definitely a party wreath. I wanted to create a colorful wreath I could bring out for any party. You could change up the colors to fit any event.

I cut out a base from chipboard (think cereal box) using the Super Sized Circle Templates as a guide. You can make it any size you wish. Paired with party streamers for the main material, this wreath is very inexpensive to make. Cut strips of crepe streamers long enough to wrap the perimeter of your wreath base. Cut four of each color and sew down the center.

Fold each sewn stack in half and trim off edges with pinking scissors or shears. I keep a pair of pinking shears just for paper projects since I use them so often. Fringe-cut the strips at each valley of pinked border as shown.

Ruffle out the strips by hand to give them fluff and volume.

Using hot glue at a low temp, adhere your first color around the outer edge of wreath base and the last color around the center as shown.

Continue with layers from each side until the middle is reached.

Do a final fluffing of the layers and you are ready to party!

I highly suggest giving wreath making a try. They are not only fun to make, but fun to display.

Tracy punches for pleasure

I used the apron lace punch, heart punch, and I made the flowers out of that punch that is like a splat. I punched out 4, and then curled 2 layers up and layered them all up.

Crafting with Arthritis

I have struggled with mild pain in my hands for over 15 years. Since the sporadic discomfort has mostly occurred when I do crafting projects that involve squeezing plastic paint bottles, using scissors for long periods of time, and using paper punches, I have either avoided those activities when possible or worked though the pain and token plenty of ibuprofen.
After several years of pain and frustration, I decided to talk to my doctor, and I was surprised to hear him say that my pain was caused from arthritis. When I received this diagnosis, I was afraid that my crafting days would be limited. Fortunately, I was able to control the occasional discomfort with anti-inflammatory medication and careful monitoring of the pain in my hands, changing activities or stopping at the first sign of pain. I did retire myself from the fabric painting hobby I had enjoyed for many years (so much squeezing of plastic paint bottles!), which left more time for scrapbooking, card making, and paper crafting.
When I was asked to join the crafts design team for Fiskars, I was elated, yet apprehensive. I wondered if I would be able to work with a company that had so many tools...especially paper punches! What I didn’t realize then was that Fiskars had completely changed the paper punch as I knew it. The Fiskars Squeeze Punch required much less force to create an image, and Fiskars had lots of fun, creative punch designs that were so easy to use.
Since I began working with the Fiskars Squeeze Punches, I have punched literally thousands of shapes with absolutely no pain in my hands. One of my favorite scrapbook layout designs involves repeating a punched shape over an entire 12-inch X 12-inch page. I’ve used this technique over and over with different shapes for the background. Not only is punching an economical way to use paper scraps, it’s visually interesting, and for someone who used to avoid paper punching because of arthritis pain, it’s just fun!

I’ve created a variation of my favorite design here, starting with a patterned paper covered in printed circles. I punched about twenty circles using the medium Fiskars Round ‘n Round Squeeze Punch and arranged them around my photos and another piece of cardstock that I cut to 8.5 inches by 7.5 inches. I punched round corners into the top of this smaller paper using the Fiskars Around the Bend Squeeze Punch to echo the circular nature of the other page elements.

When I was happy with the placement of the punched circles, I adhered everything and printed a small journaling box, again rounding two corners, and added the title. I always like to add a little bit of my own handwriting to my scrapbook pages, so when I figure out when these photos were taken, I will hand write the date where I left a small amount of space at the bottom of the journaling box.

Several years ago, I would not have considered punching all those circles for one layout because the resulting discomfort wouldn’t have been worth it. But this layout was quick and fun, and punching the circles was effortless and completely painless.
Since life is just full of paper-crafting opportunities, I’ll share something I recently volunteered to do in my Sunday school class. With a few friends, I am making cards to send to class members on a weekly basis, just reminding them that they are being thought of and prayed for during the week, remembering birthdays, and celebrating anniversaries. To get started, we are making about two hundred cards.

With four busy kids at home, I sometimes wish I had more time to just be crafty, especially when it comes to making cards. The busier I get, the more I try to duplicate cards if I manage to find a creative moment. Instead of making one card for someone, I’ll make five or ten of them. This method of mass-production is working well for the Sunday school card project. Since we are making twenty-five copies each of eight to ten designs, a mass-production plan is necessary. Since the Squeeze Punches don’t require much effort from my hand, this massive card-making event isn’t going to cause extra pain, and that’s a priority for me.

To mass-produce the card shown here,

1. Cut one 12-inch by 12-inch piece of cardstock into three pieces, each measuring 12 inches long and 4 inches wide. Repeat until you have your desired number of card pieces.
2. Fold these pieces in half so that each card is 6 inches long and 4 inches wide. Using the Fiskars Around the Bend Squeeze Corner Punch, round the corners on the opposite side of the card’s fold.
3. For each card you plan to make, cut a solid (or almost solid) blue piece of patterned paper to measure 3 inches tall by 4 inches wide.
4. Punch a tree top using the Seal of Approval Squeeze Punch. Do this for each card.
5. Punch a tree trunk for each card.
6. Print the sentiments using a 14-point font and 1.5 line spacing so they can be easily cut into strips.
7. Assemble cards with the blue piece starting 1 inch from the fold in the card, adhere all pieces.
8. Admire the growing stack of cards!

I also found out even though we are an international bunch that most mothers/caregivers said similar things to us when growing up.

BIGGEST MORNING TEA - a fun day

Well we sure had a fun time yesterday at SCRAPPY HOLLOW for the BIGGEST MORNING TEA. Cancer Council fundraiser.

....I have just been to another one this morning here in the YARRA VALLEY...hosted by a lovely young mum Clare......who used to go to kinder with our Brian........at only 28 years of age and with a little baby girl.....Clare is fighting the battle of her young life...having been diagnosed with Breast Cancer in MARCH last year................she is now about to go through rigourous treatement once again..........

...........I caught up with Clare and her mum and dad and her beautifl baby girl this morning.............was an emotional morning........................but I wish Clare all the best in her battle....she has a very positive attitude and she has fabulous family support.................I just hope and pray she can beat this aweful disease.......................anyway...............here are some pics from yesterday.....all the participants had fun creating two projects....firstly this Favour Box

and secondly some fun cards...we gave the NEW Fiskars Everywhere Punch a good workout along with other Fiskars Tools.............Border Punches,squeeze Punches,Lever Punches,Scissors and Trimmers...............one lady was absolutely delighted when I showed her that her Fiskars Trimmer had a pull out ruler underneath it....................LOL! She hadn't realised it was under there.....

............and the Morning Tea was scrumptious................

......might not all have been real healthy......LOL!  Oh what the heck.....it was yummy!!

We all had a fun time....and I got to catch up with my scrap buddy.....Carolyn who flew down from Alice Springs to attend.........................

We then headed out for some catch up time and shopping at Knox.......so nice to see and hug Carolyn after being apart for 6 months...............she and Jim have sold their home and are travelling Australia in a HUGE BUS.

Thanks must go to Heidi,Sam and Bec at SCRAPPPY HOLLOW and also to FISKARS for providing some fun giveways on the day.............................all participants got a little something!!

Jam Session Spring Cards

Several things come to mind as I look forward to spring. The snow melts, the birds look for places to nest, and the seasonal farmers market comes to town. There’s nothing better than local produce, and strawberries are one of the first things we enjoy. I created this card to celebrate the sweet joys of spring using the new Fresh Fruit Simple Stick Stamps.

With the nice open line design of the stamp set, I opted to paper piece the strawberry image using patterned paper. It’s a fun way to create a unique image without coloring in the design. Simply stamp the image twice on your patterned papers and cut out portions with your microtip scissors, then put the design back together with dimensional dots for interest. I used brown ink on this design to coordinate with the patterned paper.

I then used the same supplies to decorate a jar of homemade strawberry jam. I paper pieced the strawberry again to coordinate the tag with the card. I think it will make a nice hostess gift this spring. I can imagine using this stamp set to decorate all sorts of gifts from the kitchen along with coordinating tags and cards.

Instructions for Card:

1. Cut card base to 11” x 4 ¼”, score at 5 1/5” and fold in half lengthwise (card is portrait orientation)
2. Corner punch two upper corners
3. Border punch bottom edge with postage stamp border punch
4. Cut piece of white cardstock 2” x 4 ¼” and border punch along one edge with postage stamp border punch
5. Use tape runner to adhere white piece under front bottom edge of card to make the front even with the back of the card
6. Punch white cardstock with postage stamp squeeze punch
7. Stamp Frame on inside of card with red ink using stamp block
8. Stamp sentiment inside frame with red ink using stamp block
9. Wrap bakers twine around card front three times, tie in a bow
10. Adhere postage stamp to right of bow with pop dots
11. Stamp strawberry with brown ink on both the green plaid paper and red polkadot papers
12. Color strawberry seeds with white gel pen
13. Cut out leaves and strawberry with microtip scissors
14. Adhere both strawberry and leaves with pop dots onto the postage stamp

Instructions for Tag:

1. Using jar lid as template, cut out circle from strawberry patterned paper. Remove jar ring and place paper inside and replace ring onto jelly jar.
2. Punch tag from green plaid paper and punch hole in top of tag with handheld hole punch.
3. Computer generate words “strawberry jam” on white cardstock and punch with postage stamp punch.
4. Stamp strawberry with brown ink on both the green plaid paper and red polkadot papers
5. Cut out leaves and strawberry with microtip scissors
6. Adhere both strawberry and leaves with pop dots onto tag
7. Wrap bakers twine around jar lid tying tag onto lid with a bow.

Don't you just LOVE "Happy Mail " !!!

Hi guys

 

Feeling a bit special with some happy mail that arrived recently....thank you FISKARS !!!

 

 

 

I couldn't wait to get into it and have a bit of a play......

 

This is just the beginning of what I am sure I will make out of it all

 

I used one of the Bella chipboard pieces and attached a little 21st made out of dymo label to the centre of it, then attached it to one of the Fundamental embossed cards ......I inked up some of the words with a little bit of silver ink “very carefully”.

It is quite simple but it was the first thing I saw when I opened up the package and drooled some.....love that little key.

 

 

You may notice that in the making of this there was not a lot of use of our wonderful FISKARS tools.....I did use my microtip scissors, they are my first go to pair of scissors.

 

The next card was made from some leftover pieces, from a layout i had completed, that were sitting on my desk and I put the FISKARS Scalloped Square LEVER punch to use.....oh how I love this punch .....

 

 

also used on this one was my trusty grey twelve inch trimmer....c’mon how many of you have and love yours......I bought this trimmer some “cough” eight years ago .....and use it and my microtip on most everything I do......first two tools a new scrapper should purchase.

 

I will  be back with some other stuff I am working on at the moment

Biggest Morning Tea @ Scrappy Hollow Wednesday May 25th

After a week away in PAYNESVILLE I'm now back home and ready to have some crafty fun at SCRAPPY HOLLOW tomorrow morning for the BIGGEST MORNING TEA.

Looky what I spotted in SPOTLIGHT BAIRNSDALE last week when I was in the store!

What a fabulous range of FISKARS SCISSORS!

I found these in the HABERDASHERY section in the store.......so why not pop into your local SPOTLIGHT store to see if they also have this great range.......and looky.....they also have the Red Left handed scissors!
