Intro: I just love getting resourceful with my tools and using them to their full potential and BEYOND! So many of Fiskars tools cross the boundaries between sewing and paper crafts and it’s a lot of fun to explore all the possibilities. I used Fiskars Super Sized Ultra ShapeXpress templates and all my favorite Fiskars quilting essentials to create this “Happy Hearts” art quilt project to hang in my laundry room. Did you even know you can cut fabric with the Ultra ShapeXpress? I’ll tell you how…

Instructions (Print version)
The finished size of this quilt project is 18” square. All seams are ½” allowances. This project is probably more suited for an intermediate level seamstress and you will need to be familiar with how to bind a quilt and create mitered corners.
1. Cut the following pieces of fabric with rotary cutter:
a. White fabric- 14” x 14”
b. (4) Blue fabric (border sashing) – 3” x 14”
c. (4) Green dots (corner squares)- 3” x 3”
d. Red plaid (seam binding) – 2 1/4” x 72” (you’ll need to piece some strips together to get this length)
e. White fabric (backside of quilt) 18” x 18”
f. Super thick quilt batting 18” x 18”
2. Fuse red dot fabric to Wonder Under as product instructions direct. Place the fabric/Wonder Under FABRIC SIDE DOWN on cutting mat and cut five hearts with Ultra ShapeXpress using the Super Size hearts template. Make sure you’re using a fresh blade and it is set at the lowest depth.
NOTE: I designed the quilt with five hearts to represent each member of my family…you could do 3, 4, 5 or more!
3. Peel Wonder Under release backing from hearts and arrange the five shapes onto the 14” square of white fabric to resemble a flower. Press to fuse hearts to fabric following Wonder Under instructions.
4. Zig zag stitch around hearts with a contrasting thread (I used turquoise blue).

5. (Pin right sides together-optional and stitch two of the 3” x 14” blue fabric (sashing) strips to opposite ends of the white fabric square.
6. Stitch the four- 3” square green dotted pieces of fabric to the ends of the two remaining 3” x 14” blue strips (one on each end). Stitch these two strips to the quilt square lining up the seams of the blue strips attached in step 5.
7. Stitch ric rac along the seam where the blue sashing meets the white fabric square all the way around quilt block.
8. Stitch yellow buttons in each corner of the ric rac.
9. Layer quilt block, batting and white backing (in that order) and pin the layers together. Machine quilt (you could hand quilt it also) three rows of straight stitches around the shape of the heart flower.
10. Next press the red plaid strip to create a seam binding to finish the raw edges of the quilt. Fold ½” lengthwise and press. Repeat on the opposite side. I allowed a ¼” excess to accommodate the thickness of the fabric and batting (I used a very thick pile of batting). Sew on the seam binding in a continuous fashion mitering at the corners.

11. Add a large fabric covered button to the center of the heart flower to finish the design.
