For the New Year I have decided to do some quilting.... real quilting... no more barbie sized ones I'm doing... Baby sized ones... ;)
For a while I have had a Fiskars -Donna Dewberry square quilting ruler.....
And really - wasn't sure how to use it... was sitting in its packet for a long time but I have decided to crack open the packaging and put it to good use and make some baby quilts for babies of underprivileged families.... This being my New Years project concentration. Hopefully I can make at least 10 for 2010.
What I am relying on is fabric and batting given to me.... So far its been flowing in and I'm finally cutting....
As you see there are two pillow cases, two sarongs, scraps of material and an old bed sheet. This is the type of things I'm using to make these quilts with. I'm also using sweat-shirting material for batting for the one I'm currently making and for the back of the quilt I'm using an old table cloth that was given to me. Yes I'm using anything. lol
Don't worry its all very clean and very snugly.
Here's me using the square ruler from Fiskars...
cutting 8" squares.
I love the grid on this ruler. Its very easy to find a straight edge and cut along two edges.
I'm also using the Fiskars rotary cutter. Brilliant tool! with the Fiskars 12" cutting mat. Although I really need a bigger one this one will suffice till I get another.
And here is the squares I've cut....
Ok above you see:
2.5" wide strip
5" square
5x 8" squares - each pile is about 12 squares.
2 piles of 6" squares.
I'm only using the 8" squares for the first project.
Out of that cut up lot I have however got enough to make another
quilt top. Just need some more batting. But I'm sure that will come. I
just need to keep asking.... Something like sweatshirting/old but clean
single or larger Dacron quilt inners... that sort of thing.... off to
post it on Freecycle. ;)
Here is the quilt cover pieced together. Not "quilted" or finished yet but on its way....
Now to pin or tack the top/batting and backing all together to anchor it together so I can start machine quilting. (drawing different designs over the fabric with the sewing machine).
Then I'll be binding it together with the left over blue material used in the quilt top.
You know, for the next quilt I may try triangles.... ;) this is fun!
