Sewing - Hottie covers/PJ holders - Tutorial

Hi everyone....

The powers that be here at Fiskars Craft have deemed the sewing person.... Hmmmm I am not sure if that is a safe or good thing. LOL (really if something holds together after washing I deem it a success!)

But anyway I have had two mini problems with my kids....

1. Hotties are "too hot" without putting someting around them
2. Pajamas (PJ's or Jammies) are not put back under the pillow on the bed... ever...

Ok so they are only 5yrs and 7yrs old but I am a person that likes to keep all aspects of my home tidy and clean.... (not that I am always doing that though ;)  )

Here is a tutorial for Plush Hottie covers for you that can be doubled up as Jammie holders....

PLEASE read all instructions first before starting.

You will need:

1. various basic Fiskars shape templates - I used Circle, oval, hearts
2. Supersized Fiskars templates - Hearts, Ovals, circles
3. Fiskars No8. Scissors
4. Fiskars No5. microtip scissors or No7. Strip cutter
5. Fiskars Quilt cutting mat (I used the largest one)
6. Fiskars Square quilt ruler
7. Fiskars Titanium  loop handle Rotary cutter
8. sewing marker pen/chalk or pencils (the kind that wash out of fabric)
9. Sewing machine/thread/pins
10. Felt various colours to complete your animal face
11. Polor Fleece (I got half a meter of two colours - the width of the fabric was huge on the roll) you will have heaps left over for pillow making etc.

Step 1: we need to establish the size of the Hotties (or hot water bottles) not all are created the same.

I measured the width of the hottie and then added an extra inch on both sides. Then cut. I folded the fabric over and over to get a one cut approach as my quilt ruler is not a long one. Nothing like moving the ruler only to find that it wasn't straight.

Step 2: I am always nervous that things wont fit so Here i am making sure that my hottie will fit at this stage... with enough seam room for sewing.

step 3: with myself satisfied a the cutting and fit I put the base of our project to one side...
Then start with cutting out pieces for the dog face (my daughter wants a puppy hottie cover)
I draw on the fabric with dressmakers pencil and then cut. These are the ears.

Below so far is the placement of ears, face and nose....

now for the chin.... from dark brown felt

The eyes from white and black felt

Tongue from pink felt...

here is the placement for all pieces...

Now is the best time to pit the face all together.... then put it aside....

step 3a: making the dinosaur face... (my son is Dino mad)

I used some blue polar fleese I had in my stash already as the base of my Dino
cut out a large oval for main part of face ... smaller circle for top of head and half an oval for the bottom jawline.

And then cut out circles for eyes.

The teeth where cut out like this...

I drew triangles around the bottom half of the oval template.
Then I cut out black nostril shapes, half black oval for the mouth and green diamonds.
Here is my placing of the pieces.... best to pin these in place once you finished cutting too...

step 4: Now we are on to sewing up the character faces....
Sew tight zig zags all around your pieces....

Step 5: Now get out your main hottie base pieces we cut before and fold the ends over just about a half inch and sew

Step 6: fold the fabric, over laping the ends on one side...

Step 7: mark with pins where the folds are in the fabric... unfold and place your character face onto the front of your hottie cover.... Pin in place on the good side and sew face onto the hottie cover base. Making sure, if like the dogs ears are over lapping the sides, to leave a gap for the seam... (see both pictures)


Step 8: Fold the hottie cover back up folding in the flappy ears... good sides together and character face inside the cover..

Step 9: now place your hottie ontop of fabric and pin around it... Pins indicate where you sewing line is...

Step 10: Sew along the lines where the pins are removing them as you go...

do NOT sew the opening shut.... (the over lap bit)

step 11: now snip the corners and cut off the access fabric...

step 12: now turn the hottie in the right way... and put your hottie inside....

Top of hottie first then bottom was the best way I found to put it in...

Here are both backs of the hottie covers... see the first one I sewed (brown) is a bit different than the second.... I found that the large part of the flap is better on top... like the green one.

And our finished hottie covers again...

So now my kiddos have hottie covers at night and jammie holders during the day.

A special gift for my Mum with Love

Well.. this month was a busy one for not only me but my Mum also.

This month not only was it Mother's Day for her but it was also her birthday.

Unfortunately for her every year her birthday either falls on the Day before or after Mother's Day and occasionally on Mother's Day!

I always however make an effort to make separate cards and celebrate both occasions separately if we can.

So this year we took my mother out for her birthday (this year was the year her birthday was the day before Mother's Day) and made her this card for her special day.

We gave her vouchers to buy her new lounge suite with for her birthday too! Which was a nice little surprise for her!

The because we didn't get a chance to see my Mum on Mother's Day (we caught up the day before and we due to see her again on the Monday following Mother's Day) I made her this card and played around with my favourite Fiskars Interchangeable punch again!

Bit hard to see the first part of the greeting on the card due to the lighting unfortunately.. but is does say SUPER MUM

I also made her a mini canvas to hang in her home... just something to remind her to smile and laughter no matter how tough things get.

A short scissor story......

Everyone has a pair of scissors in their house..... me..... i have QUITE a Few! i am a bit OCD when it come to what i use them for.

For you who know me out there in the internet, i have a pair of scissors for EVERYTHING. And every pair is clearly labeled with what is to be cut with them.

Here are a few of my scissors.

As you can see on some of them i have them labeled with dymo tape. some say "paper"some say "fabric"a pair says "Glue"and a pair says "detail"......and the labeling goes on.....

Now in my household EVERYONE knows you DO NOT use the wrong scissors to cut the wrong thing or there will be hell to Pay!!  i like to keep them in the best condition as possible so that is the rule...Paper scissors for paper and so on.

 

Now you have a little background about my scissors i would like to share a story with you. i told Philippa  this story last week and she said i just had to share with you all on the blog.

 

As some of you know i went away with my hubby last week for 4 days. it was the first time i had ever left my children. as Zoe has Special needs we have never felt comfortable leaving her before now. but as she is 10 years old we thought she would be ok with her sister Poppy and my mum.

Rob and i had a great time in Melbourne and when we returned on the monday we chatted about the good time we had and we gave the kids gifts etc. All seemed fine.

We did not really notice that Zoe was not that happy that we had left her.... and as she has ASD i think she did not really like the change.

So mum went home monday night and on tuesday morning we got up and got Zoe ready for school. while getting ready to take her i notice Zoe walk out of the room with handfuls of hair and some scissors.

She had gone into her room and hacked all her hair and fringe off!!!( i suspect it was for effect to get our attention) Zoe has....i mean had.... lovely long hair, she was growing it.

She walked up to my hubby Rob and handed him the clumps of hair and the scissors. I was in shock, looking at what she had done and thinking ....ï'm going to kill her....school photos are on thursday...

"Rob just looked at her and said........ "WELL I HOPE YOU USED THE RIGHT SCISSORS!!!!!"

I do not think i have laughed so much!!!

 

I just had to share with you all because Rob said it so calmly and i do not really think he even registered what she had actually done to her hair...he was more worried about my reaction to the scissors not being used correctly!!!

Well i hope you have had a chuckle, Zoe now has a short bob hair cut and about 1 inch of fringe left and a funny looking school photo.

And just to note ....i do not have a pair of scissors that say HAIR!

SEWING SATURDAY in Spotlight Bairnsdale

Seeing we were in EAST GIPPSLAND last weekend I popped into Spotlight Bairnsdale to see what was happening during their SEWING SATURDAY special day.......

I loved watching JO create a couple of fun Fastenators.....

She was just using bits and pieces that Spotlight sell to create them......I was literally FAS-CIN-ATED!!!!

Lucy made the trip in from Lakes Entrance to demo HOW TO make some fun Bags.....I loved chatting with her.....and I wanted to share her amazing story of crafting passion...

Lucy made all these gorgeous BABY QUILTS for the NEW MUMS at the BAIRNSDALE HOSPITAL.......Chris from DRESS DEPARTMENT in Spot Bairnsdale donates the materials...and Lucy makes up the BABY QUILTS...so that every NEW MUM gets one when they leave the hospital.......isn't that a fabulous LABOUR OF LOVE.......from both LUCY and CHRIS.....

I love how the Bairnsdale Spotlight Staff all get sooooooooo involved in these Special Days.....

I believe there shall be another SEWING SATURDAY coming up later in the year....not sure when yet......but these really are fun days to attend and a great way to learn from passionate crafters.

Okay... so I guess I will share now....

Seeings as how the crop here in Adelaide was last weekend and all ... I can share now...

Here's what we created.

 

 

 

We played with lots of napkins, texture paste, butterflies and HEAPS of Helmar goodness... think we used the whole range of Helmar products on these canvases!

I must also say a HUGE thanks to Kate Mason for reintroducing me to my much loved napkins...

Been a while since a played with them like this, though have used plain napkin lots lately for textured look on my canvases.

more Quilting shares from Beryl ~ NZ

Just another couple of photos of what was worked on this weekend.  The star block is going to be a table runner for a friend. Fiskar tools well & truely
used, rotary cutter, thread snips & micro scissors.  When I did the bright's block I wasn't sure that the colours would work, but I'm pleased with the outcome.  This block will be part of a combined effort for a young boy.

It's so nice to see some Quilts from our New Zealand readers......Beryl is a very passionate quilter....who loves to share her projects with others...thanks for sending through these pics Beryl....we look forward to seeing more of your quilts in the future......

How cute is this? Out of the mouth of a 9 year old

I found this video on You Tube and just had to share with you all...... If a 9 year old can sew like this......imagine what we oldies could do.......LOL!

I love how confident Ellen is....and I love her accent...he,he.
