Start of last week I didn't know what I wanted too do.  I'll to a tidy up & put thing back in their containers.   Famous last words........
Went to the UFO container & the rest is history.  Out of the container came a table runner that I had done a few machine quilted designs on,
maybe I could just add a couple more.  Well I am thrilled to say that the runner got its few more machine quilted designs added & it got the binding
added & it is now finished.   

 

  Free motion quilting is taking over  me,  because a quilt that I thought I'd finished didn't look like it had enough quilting on it.  Needless to say it
has now been had free motion quilted designs & stippling add & now it looks completely finished.   

 

While I'm on a roll I'll see what can be finished next.

The AKUNA GARDEN at Kellyville Public School in New South Wales is looking great in the SPRING.....and check out the gorgeous Scarecrow the kids have made......

another Project Orange Thumb winner ~ this time in South Australia

At Hillcrest in South Australia AN OLD vacant Hillcrest carpark will be transformed into a community garden.

Hillcrest Primary School has received a $2500 Orange Thumb Grant from Fiskars and Bunnings to start a community garden at the site on Condamine St.

The school will use the money to create garden beds, and buy compost bins and wheelbarrows. Students will work with North East Community House to develop the garden.

Year 2 students Dawson and Delaney (pictured) have big dreams for the project.

“I want a fish pond and we can touch the fish,” Dawson says.

Delaney hopes a lot of fruit and vegetables will be grown for the students to eat.

“I want carrots and potatoes with sour cream.”

A splash of ORANGE as the shirts arrive in Sydney

Yay! The shirts have arrived. Orange is the go at Kellyville Public School at the moment for our gardeners.

Our garden has been divided into plots and the children and community helpers have been taking advantage of the cold but sunny weather to do planting.

We have planted cos lettuce, carrots, potatoes, primula, pansies, sweet peas, stock, foxgloves, snapdragons, cinerarias, sunflowers and gladiolus.

We hope the plants start growing and the snails keep away.

Akuna Garden

Kellyville Public School in Sydney, Australia had a huge patch of useless dirt and being part of the new environmental team we decided that it was time for action. We wanted to turn this dirt into a useful spectacular garden. We had the dirt, recycled water, compost bins, worm farms, chicken poo, over 500 willing gardeners but we didn’t have any tools or money. FISKARS came to the rescue when we entered the Project Orange Thumb competition and won.

We named the garden, ‘The Akuna Garden’. Akuna is an aboriginal word meaning to  ‘know and follow’. The purpose of the garden is to involve school children, teachers, parents and community groups in the planting and maintaining of the garden. Many classes are learning about growing and changing and the life cycle of a plants complement this.

We were so excited when the tools arrived and we sent teams of children out to test them. Our money arrived and it was time for shopping. We needed lots of trolleys when we went plant shopping. We are excited and ready to start  creating  our spectacular Akuna Garden.

It's so nice to see the kids involved in gardening in their school.....oops...I think one of the young ladies was so delighted and happy that she has juMPed into the bin.....LOL!

PROJECT ORANGE THUMB is just a fabulous initiative of FISKARS.....there were 4 winners awarded in Australia for 2010. Merri Corner Community Garden Dig Off Day ~ East Brunswick

Joining in with all the fun at the Merri Corner Community Garden Dig Off Day on Saturday was Cooper Naes....doesn't take kids long to find that pile of dirt ......LOL! Don't you love the orange t-shirt.....and he looks the part with his work shirt underneath.......mmm...matches his Dad's I think.....see if you can spot Nic below......

Fiskars Marketing Manager Nic Naes joined in with all the fun in East brunswisk on Saturday and took son Cooper along to help out....don't you just love all the fabulous Fiskars Gardening Tools that the TEAM were presented with as part of their win in the PROJECT ORANGE THUMB Competition......check out the size of the fork that the other little boy is holding......LOL!......mmmm....think he might just fit into his orange t-shirt.....LOL! 

Gotta' love kids........we look forward to seeing their project develop over the coming months!

The Merri Corner Community Garden was conceived in the middle of 2006 by a group of passionate East Brunswick locals. A vacant block set amongst apartments and adjacent to the Merri Creek was begging for a creative use and so meetings began and plans took shape.

Turning this under-utilised vacant plot into a dynamic, creative garden has loads of benefi ts for the Brunswick community. It’s a place to grow fresh fruit and vegies for people who don’t have gardens. We can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by cutting food miles and packaging. It’ll be great for meeting other local residents. And of course, a garden is a place to relax, stroll, or simply enjoy the colour it adds to an urban landscape.

Gardening in a group like this brings with it a real sense of Community working together.....I believe all participants had fun ,plenty of digging,plenty of food and drink and plenty of Fiskars friendship!

A fabulous Fiskars initiative!!

Project Orange kids pick first Silverbeet in Benalla

Decked out in their vibrant orange t-shirts and with new tools at the ready, children from Red group last week helped teacher, Lisa, to harvest the crop of silver beet from the vegetable patch. This existing vegetable patch is to be removed to make way for our new garden and will be replaced by a bigger one to grow even more crops of delicious fresh food.

Many of the children proudly went home with a bunch of silverbeet from the garden and will hopefully be encouraged to taste it since they grew it themselves. At Bernard Briggs Kindergarten we think this is a fantastic way to foster an interest in fresh food and healthy eating practices.

The children are now on holidays for two weeks. During this time parent volunteers are planning to take out the existing structures in our garden area, lay foundations and construct our retaining walls. It is our hope this will be finished by the time the children return for term 3 and they can begin work on planting the garden. We have ordered most of our plants and they are being stored for us until the garden is ready.

 Lisa says "We are very pleased with the progress we are making!"

Lisa and the children are all from Bernard Briggs Kindegarten in Benalla Victoria and were one of the chosen winners in this year's Project Orange Grants made available by FISKARS!

I must admit it's sooooooooo good to see kids being encouraged to garden.....they really learn so much about the plant life cycle and they get so much pleasure out of taking ownership for their hard work.....and besides...kids LO...........VVVVVVVVVVVV.....EEEEEE getting their hands dirty....LOL!

Bonus in growing veggies is that they get to eat them......amazing how kids will eat silverbeet if they have grown it themselves and are involved in the whole growing process........he.he......
